Black and White

I loved the way these varied ropes, in their careful placement by Sheela Gowda, made such striking shapes. Her work called ‘Behold’ is an installation of suspended car bumpers entangled by heavy rope made of human hair. The meaning is tied up in ritual, old superstitions, fear and the need for protection even in modern life. I was struck mostly by the contrasting shapes and the beautiful composition that was so easily made when photographing them. It was so distracting that at the time I didn’t get to take in the full meaning behind her work. I think that’s what often makes great art, it keeps you returning, wanting to know so much more.
